iPad Screen Lifting: Could a Swollen Battery Be the Cause?

A practical guide for visitors and residents in Okinawa, adapted from Smile Coating’s Japanese repair and coating advice.

Warning signs

A gap along the screen, a raised display or a frame that no longer fits the case may indicate internal pressure, including battery swelling.

Stop using and charging it

If swelling is suspected, stop charging and using the iPad. Power it off if safe to do so and keep it away from heat and flammable materials.

Never press the screen back down

Do not bend, puncture, weigh down or attempt to open a swollen device. Damaged lithium-ion batteries can be hazardous.

Other possible causes

A bent frame or damaged adhesive can also make the display lift. A technician should inspect the device before determining the cause.

What about data and repair time?

Tell the shop if you need your data. Repair options, cost and turnaround depend on the iPad model and condition; data retention cannot be guaranteed.
